Despite what people say, growing flowers doesn’t have
to be as difficult as climbing Mt. Everest!
If you think you’ve got a brown thumb, there’s no need
to worry. We’ve made a list of flowers that are easy to plant and grow, and are
low-maintenance.
Let’s get started!
{ Sunflowers
Who doesn’t love sunflowers? They’re not only
attractive but they have over 70 different species! Their scientific name is Helianthus,
which came from the Greek word “Helios” (Sun) and “Anthos” (Flower).
Sunflowers are easy to grow because they thrive in the
sun and you can grow them in (almost) any type of soil.
The only type of soil you will need to avoid is
“water-lodged” soil. They also attract bees, birds, and butterflies.
{ Coneflowers
Coneflowers belong to the daisy family. If you like
daisies but can’t grow them, you’ll love their cousins! There are around 60 to
100 varieties of coneflowers that can be found around the world today. Coneflowers
can bloom for months and grow up to be 6 feet tall. They need to be grown in
rich, well-drained soil and are able to tolerate droughts.
Coneflowers produce and secrete chemicals which
prevent growth of competing plants. This phenomenon is known as allelopathy. So,
if you have similar flowers nearby, you’ll have to re-think planting
coneflowers!
{ Marigold
Marigold comes in various colours—yellow, orange,
gold, red, and even maroon. The flower contains both male (stamen) and female
(pistil) reproductive organs.
One of the best things about marigold is that it helps
keep mosquitoes at bay. They grow in rich soil, as well as dry and sandy
gardens. They need to be grown in full sun and need plenty of water. However,
you will need to make sure they’re dried between watering.
These are some of the easiest flowers to grow if
you’re a beginner.
